CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer kicked off the 2013 campaign today with its first pre-season practice of the season.

The team will go through two-a-day practices August 7 through August 15 before the Catamounts host High Point in an exhibition at 7 p.m. August 16 at the Catamount Soccer Complex. Western Carolina will also participate in an inter-squad scrimmage on Sunday, August 11.

The Catamounts return 20 players from the 2012 squad, including 2012 Southern Conference First Team All-Conference selection, and SoCon All-Freshman pick, sophomore Markie-Lynn Studnicky. Western Carolina boasts five seniors and a staggering 10 juniors - who make up for almost a third of the squad.

Studnicky led the team in 2012 with nine goals and was just one goal shy of tying for fifth for most goals in a season. She added two assists to lead the team with 20 points. She also scored two game-winning goals. Overall, Western Carolina's returning players accounted for 20 of the team's 24 goals in 2012.

The Catamounts also welcome 10 newcomers to the squad, nine freshmen and sophomore transfer, from West Chester University, Morgan Figliola.

The team will participate in a skills exhibition, beginning at noon Saturday, August 10 at the football field, as part of the Catamount Club's Catamount Tailgate Kick-off, for Catamount Club members, preceding the Catamount football's 3:30 p.m. scrimmage.

Also, junior goal keeper Jenny Lauer will be keeping fans informed of the ins and outs, and behind the scenes of Catamount soccer, as she will be doing video blogs (vlogs) throughout the season.

The Catamount officially opens the 2013 season hosting Lipscomb at 7 p.m. August 23. It is the first of nine regular season home dates for the year.
