Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina assistant soccer coach Chris Lenzo was named as the new head coach at Southern Conference rival, The Citadel, the school announced last week. He had spent the past four seasons as the assistant coach for the Catamount women's soccer program.
Western Carolina head coach Tammy DeCesare will begin the search for an assistant immediately.
Lenzo replaces Megan Hjerling, who resigned for personal reasons in February.
"We had a number of qualified applicants and we felt that Chris had all of the traits we were looking for to lead our soccer program," said The Citadel's Senior Woman Administrator Kelly Simpson. "We are very pleased to have Chris as part of our coaching staff."
"I'm very excited about the talent we have on this team," said Lenzo. "We have the potential to make some real strides next year. After meeting with the upperclassmen, I'm really looking forward to getting back together in August for pre-season training."
A native of San Mateo, CA, Lenzo graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, IA in 1999. He then earned an M.A. in American Studies from the University of Alabama in 1994 and an M.A. in Sociology from the University of Georgia in 1999. He is married to Candace Boan, Ph.D., of Roswell, GA.
Lenzo joined the WCU coaching staff prior to the 2001 season. That year, the Catamounts won a share of the Southern Conference regular season title and fell in double-overtime to UNC Greensboro in the SoCon tournament finals.
