Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's soccer team continues to excel in the classroom as the Catamounts have been recognized for the fifth-consecutive season. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has awarded the WCU program and head coach Tammy DeCesare with their Team Academic Award. The squad has received the honor in all five seasons of DeCesare's tenure.
The NSCAA Team Academic Award is given to programs from across the nation that have achieved a cumulative 3.0 team grade point average for the previous academic year. According to the NSCAA website, out of every college and university in America that fields a soccer team covering all levels of play (Division I, II, III, and NAIA) only 337 of the over 1,100 teams were recognized.
Last season, the WCU women's soccer team had a cumulative team grade point average of 3.25, which ranked the Catamounts among the best of six Southern Conference teams eligible. During the fall of 2009, the Catamounts earned an unprecedented 3.45 GPA under DeCesare, the highest mark in DeCesare's five years of the program.
"This is quite an honor for our program," said DeCesare. "I think it speaks volumes that our girl's are not only focused in excelling on the field, but also in the academic setting as well. I am very privileged to coach a team that is very determined to be the best on and off the field."
The Catamount soccer team also had 12 student-athletes named to the Southern Conference All-Academic team for the fall semester. The Catamounts earned a cumlative GPA of 3.45 during the fall of 2009.
The Catamounts finished the 2009 season with an 8-6-5 record. Last fall marked the fifth consecutive winning season for the women's soccer program. Under DeCesare's watch, WCU has captured two Southern Conference tournament titles and made two NCAA appearances. The fifth-year coach has an outstanding career record of 58-36-13 for a .589 winning percentage, which is tops in Western Carolina school history.
