CULLOWHEE, N.C. -Western Carolina women's soccer (7-7-1, 2-5 Southern Conference) fell to Furman (11-3-1, 5-1 SoCon) 1-0 Friday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
An early goal by Furman was all the Paladins needed for the win. Carlie Couch took a header pass from Stephanie DeVita and sailed it past a diving Catamount goalie Carly Tinstmanat 7:10 into the contest.
The match was fairly even save the corner kicks - Furman had nine and Western Carolina had one. Shots were neck and neck with 12 from Furman and Western Carolina 10.
Western Carolina was aggressive in the second half keeping the ball on Furman's side of the field for almost 15 minutes in the second half. A strong shot by sophomore forward Markie-Lynn Studnickywas a solid look at the net for Western Carolina but Paladin goal keeper Rose Hull was there for the save.
It was a flurried attempt at the net for Western Carolina to close the game. Junior forward Caitlyn Bradhamhad a nice look at the goal but the shot was wide as the final seconds ticked down in the game.
Western Carolina returns to action on Sunday hosting Wofford at 2 p.m. The Catamounts will honor its four seniors: Alex Gastesi, Christine Kaznowski, Kayla Sedgley and Katie Weigel.
