CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Freshman forward Markie-Lynn Studnicky scored the game-winning goal, in the 88th minute, to lift Western Carolina women's soccer (6-7-1, 2-3-1 Southern Conference) to a 1-0 win at Chattanooga (2-9-1, 0-6-0 SoCon) Sunday at Finley Stadium.
With the match winding down, and the match scoreless, Studnicky took a pass from redshirt senior Samantha Hodge and found the back of the net for the score. It was Studnicky's sixth goal of the season and Hodge's second assist on the year.
The victory snaps Western Carolina's three-match losing streak. Both of the Catamounts' Southern Conference wins have come on the road, as WCU defeated UNCG in Greensboro, 1-0, two weeks ago.
Sophomore goalie Jennifer Lauer logged her second shutout on the year, after taking over the goalkeeper duties. She improves to 2-3-1 on the season. Lauer had a pair of saves in the match on five Chattanooga shots.
Western Carolina continued its aggressive nature offensively. The Catamounts notched 14 shots in the contest with 10 of them coming in the first half.
Studnicky and Hodge each led the team with three shots a piece in the contest.
Western Carolina continues its four-match road swing next weekend heading to Furman and Wofford on Friday and Sunday. The Catamounts match at Furman, on Friday, is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Greenville, S.C.
