CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer (5-4-1, 0-2 SoCon) fell to UNCG (5-4-1, 1-0-1) 2-0 Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The Spartans scored late goals in both the first and second half to shut the Catamounts out 2-0.
The game was scoreless for 43 plus minutes in the first half before UNCG found the back of the net. At the 43:41 mark, Katherine Rodriquez took a pass from Zoe Fishman and shot from the left side past the Catamount goalie Carly Tinstman.
Down 1-0, Western Carolina went on the offensive in the final 45 minutes. The Catamounts kept the ball on UNCG's side of the field for most of the second half.
Western Carolina had a great look at the goal at 68:28. UNCG was called for a foul and the Catamounts were awarded a kick about 20 yards out. Junior Brittany Gendron took the shot and the ball rocketed toward the goal but it was saved by the Spartans' Jamie Simmons.
UNCG did not have a shot, in the second half, until the final minute of the game, which lead to the second score for the Spartans. Defender Lauren Lover found Rebecca Burrows inside the box, which pulled Catamount goalie Tinstman out of the goal and sailed the ball into the back of the net at 89:36.
Western Carolina out-shot UNCG 11-6. The Catamounts had seven shots in the second half to the Spartans' one.
The Catamounts hit the road next weekend traveling to Davidson on Friday and Georgia Southern Sunday.
