Greenville, S.C. -
The Western Carolina women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought and tightly contested match to the Furman Lady Paladins, 1-0, Thursday evening. Both teams battle back and forth throughout the first hour of the match, with neither team able to convert on their scoring opportunities, until at the 57:53 mark of the second half, Furman's Rachel Fry collected a cross in front of the goal, and put a bouncing shot past Catamount goalkeeper Caitlin Williams for the game's only goal.
Both teams had close calls after the goal, but both goalkeepers held strong. Fry's goal came when she took a loose ball, headed it to herself, and took the shot from near point blank range, only six yards away from Williams.
Western Carolina led the two teams in shots, eight to seven, and shots on goal, four to two. Williams made on save in the losing effort, pushing her season total closer to the 40 save mark.
The loss drops the Cats to 5-5-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the Southern Conference. Furman improves to 7-3-0 and 1-0-0 in the SoCon.
WCU will look to rebound and pick up their first conference win this Sunday when they welcome the UNC Greensboro Spartans into the Catamount Athletic Complex. It is the Cat's first home match in over a month, and begins a three-game home stand for the team. Game time is 2:00 p.m. Fans who attend the game will receive free chips and salsa in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month.
