CULLOWHEE, N.C. -Western Carolina women's soccer (5-3-1, 0-1 Southern Conference) dropped its opening Southern Conference match of the season 3-1 at Elon (6-1-1, 1-0 SoCon) Thursday at Rudd Field.
It was a hotly contested match early in the match, as both teams scored quick goals. Elon struck first when Jennifer McGorty took a cross from Martissa Russo and sailed it past Catamont freshman goalie Carly Tinstmanat the 8:10.
Two minutes later, at 10:00, junior forward Caitlyn Bradham scored sending a header into the goal, inside the box, off a cross by Madison Lee. It was Bradham's third goal of the season and the second in as many games.
Elon took the lead for good at 19:06. The Phoenix scored after benefiting from a corner kick. Olivia Mackey kicked the ball from the corner, skimming the foot of Chelsey Stark, allowing Nicole Dennion to send it into the back of the net.
After Elon took the 2-1 lead, Pannell took a shot about 10 yards out but it was saved by Phoenix goal keeper Kate Murphy. It was the only shot by Western Carolina in the final 20 plus minutes of the first half.
Just minutes into the second half, Elon tacked on a third goal. At 47:10 Stark, after an assist in the first half, scored took a cross from McGorty and scored on a shot past the right post.
Western Carolina had just three shots in the second half with one of them on goal. Pannell had three of the Catamounts' eight total shots in the match. Tinstman played her first full match of the season, in goal, and falls to 0-3-1 on the year.
Western Carolina returns home Sunday to host UNCG. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
