Catamount Soccer Shuts Out Youngstown State, 2-0

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina soccer team took control of the match early and never let up, as they recorded their third shutout of the season, defeating Youngstown State, 2-0. The Catamounts improve to 2-3-1, while YSU drops to 1-6 on the season. It didn't take long for the Cats to score as freshman Stephanie Svoboda took a pass from Meghan Reilly and slipped it past the fallen goalkeeper, Mia Railing, at 5:22. Not more than nine minutes later, senior Lauren Bramlett scored her first goal of the season from five yards out on a bump from Svoboda. Western was able to hold the Penguins at bay, only allowing three shots in the first period to the Catamounts' 15. In the second, neither team was able to score, although WCU continued its offensive threat, firing 10 shots in the final half, while only allowing YSU to get four off. Senior keeper Tina Weaver, who ranks 27th nationally in saves per game (7.4), recorded her second shutout of the season, tallying five saves in the match. Railing scooped up nine saves for the night. The Cats out-shot the Penguins, 25-7, for a season-high total. Western Carolina returns to Southern Conference action this Saturday, Sept. 20, as WCU hosts the Davidson Wildcats at 12:30 pm at Schrader Field.
