Clemson, S.C. -
The Western Carolina women's soccer team was unable to overcome two early goals by the nation's 20th ranked team and fell to the Clemson Lady Tigers, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C.
Clemson notched their first goal of the game in the 28th minute when Samantha Fortier executed a give-and-go from teammate Molly Franklin and put her shot just outside the reach of Catamount goalkeeper Caitlin Williams. Later in the first half the Lady Tigers struck again on a corner kick that landed in front of a group of players, and in the chaos Clemson forward Meghan Smith was able to get a foot on the ball and put it in the goal.
The Catamounts (3-2-0) did not let the early deficit take them out of their game plan, and fought valiantly throughout the remaining time. As true to form, eight different Catamount players registered shots in the game. On the year, 14 players have attempted shots on goal, which is one of the most balanced attacks in the Southern Conference.
Williams settled down after the early goals and ended the contest with eight saves, and kept her goals against average under one goal per game. The Cats were able to stay close with Clemson (4-0-0) in number of shots, tallying 11 to Clemson's 16. In shutting out the Lady Tigers in the second half, Western was able to keep alive their streak of three consecutive games without letting up a goal in the second frame.
The Catamounts look to rebound from the tough battle when they travel to Johnson City, Tennessee, to participate in the East Tennessee State Invitational Friday, September 14 against Stetson University and Sunday, September 16 when they take on the host ETSU Bucs. Game time for the game against Stetson is set for 1:00 p.m.
