Women's Soccer Opens 2017 With 3-1 Win Over Morehead State

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's soccer team opened up its 2017 campaign with a 3-1 home win against Morehead State Friday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

Tied 1-1 at halftime, Western Carolina scored two unanswered goals in the second half to secure the win. Juniors Sayres McKenna and Megan McCallister each scored a goal and dished out an assist in the second half to aid the Catamounts in the victory.

 

Turning Point
Tied 1-1 in the second half, McKenna put Western Carolina on top, 2-1, at the 50:29 mark when she took a pass from McCallister and scored from the left side into the top right of the goal.

Individual Leaders
- McKenna and McCallister each recorded a goal and an assist in the match.
- Sophomore Emily Threatt scored the first goal for the Catamounts, answering the Eagles goal in the first half, to tie the game 1-1 in the first half.
- Junior Jacquelyn Gnassi earned the first start of her career getting the starting nod to start the game. She played the first half before splitting time with freshman Natalia Icen who played the second half.

Inside the Box Score
- Icen got the win in the contest as Western Carolina scored two goals in the second half after the game was tied 1-1 at the end of the first half. She is now 1-0 for the season.
- Threatt scored the first goal of the 2017 season off an assist by Kasey Cooke. Her goal at the 31-minute mark tied the game 1-1.
- Western Carolina doubled up Morehead State in the shots department with 16 to the Eagles' eight. - Icen had a save in the game to go along with the win.
- Twenty-one Catamounts saw action in the game.

News & Notes
- Freshman Hannah McClaugherty was the lone Catamount freshman to earn a nod in the starting line-up to open the 2017 season. All told, four freshmen got into the game.
- Western Carolina is now 12-6-1 in home openers and 10-9 in season openers.
- The Catamounts' win over Morehead State pushes the two teams records against each other to 1-1-1.
- WCU moves to 5-3 in season openers under head coach Chad Miller with the win against the Eagles. - With the assist in the second half, McKenna moves into a tie for the fourth place in the WCU record books with 14 in her career.
- McKenna now has 32 points in her career, and with teammate Kasey Cooke's assist in the first half giving her 32 points as well, both are tied for 15th in the Catamount record books.
