CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
Western Carolina women's soccer defeated Winthrop 2-0 Wednesday, in the first of two exhibition games this week, at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The Catamounts and Eagles played three 30 minute halves. This gave the coaching staffs, from both teams, a chance at two 10 minute half-times used for instruction.
After a scoreless first 30 minutes, Western Carolina got on the scoreboard in the second 30 minutes of play.
Eleven minutes into the second 30 minute segment, junior forward Markie-Lynn Studnicky got the Catamounts on the scoreboard. Studnicky found an opening about five feet in front of the goal, dribbling around a defender, sending the ball into the back of the net.
Early in the third period the Catamounts got its insurance goal off the foot of freshman forward Chandler Arrowood. After a pass by fellow freshman Deyana Walker, Arrowood took the ball, made a move and got the opening to the goal. Arrowood sent the ball over the head of Winthrop goal keeper Caroline Duncan for the second score of the game.
Western Carolina will continue its preseason with two practices on Thursday as it also prepares for its second exhibition game of the season. The Catamounts will host UNC Asheville at 7 p.m. Friday.
The team will officially open the season at 7 p.m. Aug, 22 against Eastern Kentucky University.
