Western Carolina Goes 1-1 in Final Spring Tournament

April 20, 2008

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's soccer team wrapped up their 2008 spring schedule on Sunday when they hosted a trio of teams in a round-robin tournament at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

The Cats welcomed in Western Kentucky and Carson-Newman to Cullowhee for a three-game tournament, in which each team played the other two one time, in two 30-minute halves per game.

Western finished the day 1-1, after defeating Carson-Newman, and falling to Western Kentucky in the opening contest.

WCU battled the Hilltoppers from Western Kentucky in the first game of the day, falling 1-0, despite a goal in the first half by sophomore Bri Cunningham that was called back due to an offsides call. The two teams battled throughout the 60 minutes with only the lone WKU goal as the difference.

In the second contest, Carson Newman took down Western Kentucky, 3-1, giving WKU a 1-1 record overall.

The Catamounts closed the day with a dominating 3-0 win over the Eagles from C-N, with the scoring coming from three different players. In the first half, it was an all-Nikki connection when sophomore Nikki Collins assisted classmate Nikki Lombardo on the first goal of the game, capitalizing on a poor clearance from the Eagle defense to put WCU up, 1-0.

Fellow sophomore Rachael Shomper provided the second goal of the game when she beat her defender down the sideline, turned the corner and beat the goalkeeper to the near post to push the score to 2-0. Cunningham continued her impressive spring with her fourth goal of the season, putting the ball in the back of the net off a layoff pass from freshman Liz Eichler.

Western Carolina will now turn their focus to the 2008 fall season, which will kick off on August 14 when the team travels to Blacksburg, Va. for an exhibition against Virginia Tech. The regular season opener will come a week later when WCU will take on East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. on August 22. The home opener for the Catamounts will be on September 5, when the Butler Bulldogs come to visit the Catamount Athletic Complex.
