Yon Struble enters his first season with the Western Carolina women's soccer team after joining the staff in late April, 2009. His duties will include a broad range within the Catamount Soccer program with his primary focus serving as the recruiting coordinator, youth camp director, technical director for team training and coaching the goalkeepers.
Struble comes to Western from the Norcross Soccer Academy in Atlanta, Ga., where he spent the last six years working with teams ranging in age from 9-to-19. His stint at NSA included serving as the Girls Technical Director for each of the past two years. He is a United States Soccer Federation "A" Licensed Coach and holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advanced National Diploma.
Prior to his position as Technical Director, Struble served as the women's assistant at Georgia State University in Atlanta from 2002-05. While at Georgia State, Struble worked with all aspects of the program including team practices, recruiting, and fundraising. There, Struble's goalkeepers were named All Atlantic-Sun Conference in 2004. The Panthers compiled a 32-19-9 overall record over his three seasons on staff.
During his tenure at Georgia State, Struble obtained his Master of Arts in Reading Education.
Struble has also been a staff member for Georgia Olympic Development Program (ODP) for seven years, serving as the head coach for the 87, 89.93, 94, and 95 age groups. In 2005, he took the 89' Girls to the ODP National Championships where the team finished third. In addition, he had also been a member of the Region 3 ODP coaching staff for each of the past four years.
In 2008, he was awarded United States Youth Soccer National Girls Competitive Coach of the Year at the U.S. Youth Soccer Coaching Symposium in Pittsburgh, Pa. In 2007, Struble was awarded Georgia Coach of the Year and Region III Coach of the Year, leading to his National Coach of the Year Award.
Before his arrival in Georgia, Struble was the women's assistant at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., for five years, from 1998 to 2002. While at Union, Struble helped the Dutchwomen achieve three NCAA tournament bids, three UCAA conference championships, a pair of New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) State Championships, as well as a Top 20 National Ranking for all five of his years as an assistant coach.
All told, Union posted a 71-14-6 record during his five seasons.
While in New York, Struble was a staff member for Eastern New York ODP for five years working with various age groups, and was a Region 1 staff member for one year before leaving for Georgia in 2002.
Struble played his college soccer at Division I Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., where he received his undergraduate degree in Elementary Education.
After his time at Stetson, Struble moved back to New York to play soccer in the Empire State Games where his men's open team won the Gold medal in 1996. From 1997 to 1999, he played professionally for the New York Capital District Alleycats of the USISL.
Yon comes to Cullowhee with his wife, Shanna, and has two beautiful children, Hudson and Harper.
