During halftime of Tuesday's men's basketball game, a 77-72 Catamount victory over East Carolina in overtime, the Western Carolina Department of Athletics honored four people who epitomize the term student-athlete. Catamount director of athletics Chip Smith and Western Chancellor John Bardo presented junior Brandy Andersen, junior Ashley Hovda, junior Erika Danford and sophomore Bianca Melone plaques for being named to the 2004 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar team.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. Student-athletes must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 60 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
This marks the fourth consecutive year Western Carolina has had at least one representative on the team and a total of 10 honors for the Cats over that span. Additionally, the women's golf team has maintained a cumulative 3.5 GPA for seven consecutive seasons.
Andersen and Hovda are Western's first two-time All-American Scholars, while Danford and Melone earned their first honor.
Andersen, who was the 2002 Southern Conference champion, is majoring in sport management and carries a 3.7 GPA. Hovda, who was an All-Southern Conference honoree last season, is a majoring in business management and carries a 3.5 GPA. Danford is majoring in sport management and carries a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA. Melone is majoring in business and carries a 3.9 GPA.
