Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina junior goalkeeper Alesha Row and senior golfer Brandy Andersen were honored today by the Southern Conference office as they were named SoCon Athletes of the Month for their respective sport for the month of November. Each month, the conference selects one athlete from each in-season sport, which included football (offensive and defensive), men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's basketball and wrestling.
Row's selection was the first monthly honor for the women's soccer team during their championship season, while the selection of Andersen marks the third-consecutive SoCon Golfer of the Month honor awarded to Western Carolina during the fall season. Andersen's classmate, Ashley Hovda, garnered back-to-back honors in September and October.
Row (Fargo, N.D.) acquired a record of 3-1 in the month of November, which included commandeering back-to-back shutouts in the SoCon Women's Soccer Championship helping with her school record 13 shutouts on the season. She finished the month with a goals against average of 0.73, while making 20 saves for a save percentage of 87 percent. Row was also awarded the SoCon Women's Championship Most Outstanding Player trophy after helping the Catamounts to their first ever SoCon crown and their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Row was also named the SoCon's TIAA-CREF Student-Athlete of the Week following the championship run and was tabbed WCU's Female Student-Athlete of the Month for November, as well.
Andersen (Orlando, Fla.) finished in sixth place overall at the Augusta State/Lady Jaguar Invitational after firing back-to-back rounds of 77 in the tournament. The top 10 finish was Andersen's third of the fall season and helped her continue to own the record as Western's all-time leader in stroke average, with a career average of 77.06 over 90 rounds.
