Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina junior Ashley Hovda was selected as the Southern Conference women's golf student-athlete of the month for November, the conference office announced today. She was one of 10 student-athletes selected from the 13 total Southern Conference members, including VMI for wrestling only.

Hovda averaged a 77.4 in five rounds for Western Carolina in November. The Springfield, Ohio, native placed 10th to lead the team to a sixth-place finish at the Augusta State Invitational on November 9, firing a two-round 158 (78-80) which was only six strokes off the leader. She also placed 38th at the Edwin Watts Intercollegiate in Kiawah, S.C., on November 2 after shooting a three-round 229 (76-71-82), leading the Catamounts to a tie for 10th overall.

Hovda currently ranks atop the single-season leader board for stroke averages heading into the spring portion of the 2004-05 season. In 15 rounds during the fall, she fired an average of 75.80 to rank nearly an entire stroke over second on the list, current teammate Brandy Andersen's season in 2003-04. Also, Hovda currently ranks fourth on the WCU All-Time Career Stroke Average list with a career 78.28 average.

The Lady Catamount golf team returns to action in the spring semester, traveling to Pinehurst, N.C., to compete in the College of Charleston/Pinehurst Shoot-out on March 6-8, 2005.
