Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina director of golf Steve Lott today announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to begin play for the Catamounts in the fall of 2006. Desiree Karlsson (Hollviken, Sweden) and Elin Mickelsson (Gavle, Sweden) both inked NLI's for the 2006-07 academic year.
Karlsson is currently attending Sundsgymnasiet High School in Vellinge, Sweden, and will graduate in June of 2006. In 2005, she established herself as one of the top juniors not only in her native Sweden, but in all of Europe. She finished 23rd on the Junior Solheim Cup Order of Merit, which ranks all European golfers age 18-and under. As a member of the Swedish National Team, Karlsson played individually in the 2005 British Junior Girls Championships, marking the eighth time she has competed in an international competition.
"Desiree will make an immediate impact on our team," said Lott. "Her determination and devotion to the game will make her a force in the Southern Conference over the next four years."
Mickelsson is in her third year at the Swedish National Golf High School in Perstorp, Sweden, which is operated by the Swedish Golf Federation and is set up as a training ground for the best junior golfers in Sweden. Mickelsson is a solid player who won for the first time on the Swedish regional tour in 2001, duplicating her victorious appearance in 2004. She also recorded runner-up finishes on the Swedish national tour over each of the past two years.
"I am very excited to have Elin (Mickelsson) join our squad next year. She is everything you look for in a recruit - very strong physically and is dedicated to her sport and academics. She will be a great addition to our team," Lott said.
The 2005-06 edition of the Catamount women's golf team recently completed arguably the best fall season in the program's history. Western won three team and individual titles over the fall of 2005, with each golfer lowering their overall stroke average. The Catamounts return to the links for the spring portion of their schedule on March 6-7 in Mobile, Ala., at the South Alabama/Lady Jaguar Invitational.
