Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina women's golf head coach Steve Lott announced today that Bianca Melone of Orlando, Fla., had signed a National Letter of Intent to play at WCU next year.

Melone is set to graduate from Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando in 2003. In her one year at Lake Highland, the Highlanders placed first in district competition and at regionals and were the state runners-up. Melone also placed first individually at the district and regional tournaments. She finished out the season with a nine-hole stroke average of 41 and a low round of 34.

Prior to her time at Lake Highland, Melone played two seasons at Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Fla. During her junior season there, her nine hole stroke average was 38. She also made the all-county first team both years and helped her team to a first place finish in the district and regional tournaments as well as placing fourth as a team at the state tournament. Melone played her freshman year at Cypress Creek High School in Orlando, Fla., where she averaged 43 strokes per nine.

"We are very excited that Bianca has chosen Western Carolina," said Lott. "Academically, she is very strong and athletically she possesses a power game seldom seen in women's golf. She will be a great asset in helping take our program to the next level."

The Western Carolina women's golf team has set its schedule for the spring 2003 season, head coach Steve Lott announced today. The women will appear in three tournaments before playing host to the 2003 Southern Conference Championship April 18-20.
