Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina women's golf coach Steve Lott has announced the signing of Kandy Carland to a National Letter of Intent. A local high school standout at West Henderson H.S., Carland hails from Etowah, N.C.

"We're very excited to have one of the best female golfers to come from the mountains stay so close to home and pursue her golfing career at Western Carolina," Lott said. "Kandy is an awesome young lady whose golfing ability and personality will elevate this program for the next four years."

Among her many achievements at West Henderson, Carland is a four-time Kiwanis All-Star Athletic Award winner, four-time all-conference selection and four-time Times-News and Asheville Citizen-Times All-Western North Carolina honoree. A four-time NCHSAA state championship qualifierl, she additionally qualified to play in the U.S. Junior Girls Championship at Brooklawn Country Club in Hartford, Conn., this fall. At the event, Carland finished in a tie for 64th out of 156 golfers.

Carland has claimed three Junior golf tournament titles this year including the Caramel Junior Championship, Mid Pines Junior Invitational and the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational, which is held at the Mimosa Golf Course in Morganton. The 2004 graduate has accomplished a nine-hole scoring average of 37 this year and an 18-hole scoring average of 75.3, with her low round being a 69. For her outstanding play, the senior was named the 2003 Highlands Conference Player of the Year. Carland finished fourth overall at this year's NCHSAA State Championship.

The Catamount women's golf team resumes play in the spring as the team heads to Tamps, Fla., to compete in the NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate March 11-12.
