Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina senior linebacker Rod Dunlap has been named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Month for October, while sophomore Brandy Andersen was named the SoCon Women's Golfer of the Month, marking the second consecutive month she has received the honor. One athlete was chosen from each fall sport: football (offense and defense), men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's cross country, and men's and women's golf.
Dunlap (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds HS) posted a team-high 39 tackles for the month of October, an average of 9.75 tackles per game, facing three nationally-ranked teams during the span. Of his 39 stops, nine have been for losses, including a sack, while adding a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and an interception. Versus a sixth-ranked Furman team, Dunlap had 11 tackles, including three for losses, with a fumble recovery. At Georgia Southern, who was ranked 11th, he tallied nine stops with a forced fumble and an interception. Versus Wofford, who is currently ranked fifth, Dunlap registered 12 tackles with four coming behind the line of scrimmage. He concluded the month with a seven-tackle performance at Chattanooga, including one TFL.
With his nine TFLs for the month, Dunlap now has 42 for his career to move to fourth on the WCU all-time list, trailing only teammate Michale Spicer (53), Louis Cooper (48) and Clyde Simmons (47). Dunlap ranks third in the SoCon with his 14 TFLs on the season and eighth in tackles, averaging 8.3 per game. He has also anchored a defense which ranks third in the SoCon and 39th nationally in rushing defense, allowing 135.89 yards per game (and that is having played four teams who rank among the NCAA I-AA's top 30 in rushing).
Andersen (Orlando, Fla./William R. Boone HS) continues to rewrite the WCU women's golf record books. For the month of October, Andersen won two consecutive tournament titles. First, she claimed medalist honors at the Lady Pirate Fall Intercollegiate with a 215 (second-lowest, three-round score in WCU history). She fired rounds of 72, 74 and 69 to lead the Cats to a third place finish at the event. She then won Western's Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercollegiate with a two-round score of 145 (71-74), which ranks as the third-lowest, two-round score in school history. It was the second consecutive year the Orlando, Fla., native had claimed medalist honors at the Catamounts' home event and the second straight year the Cats have won their own tournament, doing so this time with a 592 over two-rounds.
The Lady Catamounts wrap up their fall tournament play next week as they travel to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the Edwin Watts - Palmetto Intercollegiate Nov. 3-4.
Other Athletes of the Month included Chattanooga's Steven Kocsis (men's cross country), Davidson's Allie Martin (women's cross country), Chattanooga's Alonzo Nix (football-offense), Davidson's Christian Davis (men's golf), Davidson's Bart Creasman (men's soccer), UNC Greensboro Jennifer Stillman (women's soccer) and College of Charleston's Stephanie Ballard (volleyball).
