Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina junior Josefine Sundh was today named the Southern Conference Women's Golfer of the Month for September by the conference office. Sundh recorded her first two career individual championships during the month while helping guide WCU to team titles in each of its first three events of 2009-10.

Sundh, who averaged 71.83 in three monthly events, becomes just the fifth Western Carolina women's golfer to garner player of the month accolades all-time. Of the nine monthly awards captured by WCU since 2003, four have come during the opening month of September.

The Catamount women's golf team has matched its best start in school history, duplicating the three team championships in its first three events recorded back in the 2005-06 season. Through its first three events this season, WCU has posted a team stroke average of 294.33 with Sundh winning twice and freshman Malin Jansson and senior Tiffany Schisler each securing individual victories, sharing the Great Smokies Intercollegiate championship.

Sundh carded consecutive one-under par rounds of 71 to best countryman and teammate, Desiree Karlsson, by a stroke at the season-opening Draper Valley Intercollegiate, hosted by Appalachian State in southwestern Virginia.

It was the second-straight individual medalist honor for a WCU golfer at the event as Blaire Minter won the event last season. It was also the third individual championship in the past four seasons by a Catamount, with each representing the golfer's first-ever victory. Malin Fryk captured the 2006 crown for her first career win, with Minter and Sundh joining the ranks the past two seasons.

Sundh then posted a 13th-place finish at the rain-shortened Great Smokies Intercollegiate, shooting a one-over 73 in helping the Catamounts claim their seventh team championship in the 11-year event.

A native of Kumla, Sweden, Sundh finished the month by winning the Sea Trail Intercollegiate, again nipping Catamount teammate, Karlsson, but this time by four strokes after shooting an even-par 216 (71-72-73), the third-best, 54-hole score by an individual in school history.

For her career, Sundh has three career top fives including the two individual medalist honors from this season, with a combined six top 10 individual finishes. Her career stroke average of 78.19 currently has her eighth on WCU's all-time career scoring ledger.

Western Carolina will vie for its unprecedented fourth-straight individual and team title when it returns to action October 11-13 at the Lady Spider Intercollegiate at the Independence Golf Club in Richmond, Va.
