Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina senior Ashley Hovda has been selected as the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for October 5, released today by the SoCon office.

Hovda shot a WCU school-record, 10-under par, 134 to defend her Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercollegiate individual championship last weekend at the Waynesville Country Club, winning by five strokes. The win was her second of the 2005-06 season as she claimed individual medalist honors a week prior at the Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate at Sunset Beach, N.C. Hovda's individual title was the third for the Catamounts this season and marked the fifth-consecutive year a Western golfer has medaled at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate. En route to the 36-hole, school-record, the Springfield, Ohio, native tied the lowest single-round in school and tournament history, carding a 66 over the final 18 holes of the two-day event.

Hovda has lowered her career average to 77.67, currently third on Western's career average stroke list. She is also shooting a season-average 70.33, the lowest among all golfers whose school reports to Golfstat. Hovda ranks second in the "Golfstat Cup" rankings after three events thus far this season.

In addition to her prowess on the links, Hovda also excels in the classroom. She is a management major with a 3.418 grade point average. The Catamount women's golf team entered the fall semester with a 3.463 combined cumulative GPA, third among all the athletic teams at Western Carolina.

Hovda and the Cats return to the links on October 21-23 at the East Carolina Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C.
