Ft. Chiswell, Va. - The season opener is now behind us, and what a start we had. After thirty-six holes of competition Western stood alone at the top of the leader board. We won our very first tournament and we couldn't be any more excited. The atmosphere today at Draper Valley was one of intense concentration for four and a half hours. When all the scores were tallied it quickly turned to euphoria. This gives us a huge confidence boost headed into the rest of our fall season.

Today, I had to be at the course thirty minutes before the rest of my team because I was playing with the other individuals. The rest of the team arrived when I was headed to the tenth tee (my first hole of the day) and they came down to watch me tee off before beginning their warm-ups. The team began teeing off at 9:50 and we got out to a much quicker start than how we began in round one.

At the turn, each player was no more than two over par, and from there we put it on cruise control. Everyone on the team worked hard to solidify the win, and at the end of the day our goals for this opening tournament were realized. As each of us finished, we joined the others on a small hill behind the eighteenth green to cheer on teammates that were playing behind us. We became especially rowdy for Malin since she carded another even par seventy-two.

The awards ceremony was held at the pavilion after all scores were totaled, and we pulled off both the team and individual championship. We finished a total of thirteen strokes ahead of second place Elon, and Malin Fryk finished one stroke better than the second place individual. What a great feeling it is to earn a "W" right out of the gates.

We have a lot to build on headed into next week's Sea Trail Intercollegiate in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It is there that we will try to repeat as champions from two years ago. The team's morale is at an all-time high. We have what it takes to earn a Southern Conference Championship and we will work relentlessly in pursuit of our dream.
