Cullowhee, N.C. - The 2002-03 Lady Catamount golf team, spear headed by head coach Steve Lott, will take to the links this fall with a young, but very talented group of golfers.
Returning are three players that shattered every school record last season. Junior Becca Twiner will be the veteran member of a team with no seniors. Last year, Twiner became the first Lady Cat to ever win a collegiate event, taking medalist honors at Belmont's Lady Bruin Invitational. Not only did she win, she blew away the field with a seven-stroke victory. Twiner placed among the top 10 in four events last season and four additional top 25 finishes, while lowering her season scoring average from 81.4 as a freshman to 78.4 as a sophomore.
Line Cordes, a sophomore from Bronderslev, Denmark, returns after an unprecedented freshman campaign. She finished in the top 10 in seven of the team's 10 events, including an individual title at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate at Waynesville Country Club and three other top four finishes. Cordes was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and became the first Lady Cat to ever make the all-conference team. She was additionally the Arby's/Catamount Student-Athlete of the Month twice, holds the WCU 18-hole record of 71 and the 36-hole record of 144 and posted a 77.7 scoring average for the season.
Another outstanding sophomore is Johanna Lundberg. The Tumba, Sweden, native also had a great freshman season, ending the year with seven top 10 finishes and a scoring average of 78.0. She currently holds the WCU 54-hole scoring record, carding a 227. In addition to her performance on the course, she is a leader in the classroom. With English as her second language, Lundberg finished her first year with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
The other returnee from last year's squad is junior Meredith Beck. A local product, hailing from Hendersonville, Beck played in six events last season.
The freshman class is one of the strongest ever at Western. Ashley Hovda of Springfield, Ohio, and Brandy Andersen of Orlando, Fla., bring very impressive resumes. Hovda was the Springfield Sun Times Player of the Year and was twice named to the Dayton All-Area first team. The two-time state tournament qualifier finished her senior year with an impressive 76.6 scoring average. Andersen, who posted a 76.0 scoring average as a senior, was the 2001 Player of the Year on the Central Florida Juniors tour and finished in the top 20 in the state championship. This past summer, Andersen was invited to play in the prestigious Rolex Junior Championships.
Another newcomer this fall is Jennifer Palmer of Bishop Verot HS in Fort Myers, Fla. Palmer helped lead her team to the district championship the past two years.
The Lady Cat linksters will open the season on Sept. 6 in the Unlimited Potential-Bay Tree Classic at Myrtle Beach, S.C. They will host the Wachovia Great Smokies Intercollegiate at Waynesville Country Club on Oct. 21-22.
