Chicago, Illinois - Western Carolina University women golfers Ashley Hovda, Brandy Andersen, Johanna Lundberg and Line Cordes were named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team, it was announced over the weekend, with 297 women collegiate golfers in all three divisions being recognized with this prestigious honor. WCU was one of only five schools to have at least four players win this award in the same year.
Hovda posted a 3.6 cumulative grade point average with Andersen earning a 4.0, Lundberg earning a 3.9 and Cordes posting a 3.8 GPA. The four also helped the team achieve a cumulative team GPA of 3.6 after the spring semester.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 66 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
For the third year in a row, at least one Lady Catamount golfer has received this prestigious honor. Prior to this year, Shelly Glenister (2001) and Brook Stillman (2002) were recipients of this award.
"This is our finest hour," said Catamount golf coach Steve Lott. "This team has set a standard for all future teams to try and achieve. We won three tournaments, had three All-Southern Conference team members, won the conference title and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the first time ever. Now we have four All-American Scholar recipients in the same year. This golf team has achieved the ultimate goal placed in front of them by our Athletic Department. They have strived to be the best at everything they do and we're very proud."
Others from around the conference earning this award are Erin McAffee and Jennifer Monko of Appalachian State, Katherine Knoepffler of Elon, Tiarna Harman and Cimmie Shahan of Furman, and Suzanne Campbell of The Citadel.
