Cullowhee, N.C. -
Desiree Karlsson, a rising sophomore on the women's golf team at Western Carolina, completed play at the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship this week with an 11th-place finish in stroke play which advanced her to the match play portion of the event. Karlsson and Breanne Loucks of Wales needed golf's version of overtime to settle their opening round match-up with Karlsson falling to Loucks, 1-up, on the 20th hole of the round to conclude her play at the par 72, 6,198-yard Alwoodley Golf Club.
Among 144 women's golfers from around the world, Karlsson fired a two-round, two-over 146 (72, 74) in stroke play to finish in a three-way tie for 11th to advance into match-play portion of the championship. She was one of the final 64 still in contention for the championship after the opening two rounds, and was involved in one of four first-round match play showdowns that required extra holes.
Karlsson, the 2006-07 Southern Conference Women's Golf Freshman of the Year, was even par after the opening round on June 12, countering four bogies with a pair of birdies and an eagle on the par 5 No. 16. The following day (June 13), the Ljunghusen, Sweden native was poised to take a one-under, 35, to the back nine after opening the day with a birdie. Yet, a bogey on No. 9 left her making the turn at even par through the front nine.
All told, Karlsson played the first 27 holes even par, with bogeys on the par 4 No. 10 and No. 15 to shoot two-over on the final nine holes to finish at two-over. She finished with 23 pars, four birdies and an eagle to counteract eight bogies and she only played nine holes with a score above par in stroke play.
