On Thursday, May 25, former Western Carolina women's golfer, Sarah Parris, and one other were awarded the Bronze Star Medal at Robins Air Force Base for exceptionally meritorious service.
Parris was a member of the Catamount women's golf team from 1996 through 2000, leading the team in scoring average as a freshman and again as a junior during the 1998-99 season. During her four year career, Parris led the Catamounts in 14 events, posting a career-best finish of ninth at the Murray State Invitational in 2000.
Parris continues to rank 11th on Western's all-time career scoring charts with 6,458 strokes in 76 total rounds for a stroke average of 84.97.
Last November, Parris was injured in an accident when her Humvee rolled over while on duty in Iraq. She was featured in the following article printed in the Macon Telegraph:
Robins women officers earn Bronze Stars for Iraq service

ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE - On the surface, it seemed like a near impossible task - sending two women officers from the 78th Security Forces Squadron to train Iraqi troops in the latest force protection techniques.
But that was May of 2005. Thursday, before their peers in the Robins Air Force Base unit, the two officers were awarded the Bronze Star Medal for exceptionally meritorious service.
Maj. Michelle Stringer and 1st Lt. Sarah Parris received the honor during a ceremony presided over by Col. Theresa Carter, the 78th Air Base Wing commander.
