Cullowhee, N.C. - On May 21, Western Carolina women's golfer Bianca Melone fired the second-lowest sectional qualifying round to earn a berth in the 2006 United States Women's Amateur Public Links Championships to be held June 20-25 at the Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colo. Melone finished second in the sectional round held at The Links at Boynton Beach, Fla., shooting 71 to edge third-place by a single stroke.

The U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links (WAPL) Championship began in 1977. The event is open to female golfers who have been bona fide public golf course players since Jan. 1 of the championship year. The WAPL is one of 13 national championships conducted by the United States Golf Association (USGA), 10 of which are for amateurs.

"This is quite an accomplishment for Bianca. She finished out our season playing well and the confidence she gained seems to have carried over," said Western Carolina head coach, Steve Lott. "In addition to being able to continue playing golf this summer, the competitive environment at the national tournament will offer even more exposure and valuable experience for her as she returns for her senior season here in Cullowhee."

An Orlando, Fla., native, Melone ranked third in scoring average for Western this past season, averaging a career-best 77.54, a stroke and a half lower than her previous career-best. She was twice the low scorer for the Catamounts last season, shooting 150 (77-73) at the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational in Mobile, Ala., for a ninth-place finish and was Western's highest finisher at the Southern Conference Championships with a two-round score of 142 (71-71) to finish tied for second.

Melone has finished in the top 15 as an individual each year at the SoCon Championship, garnering all-tournament honors in 2006. Also, her career average at Western, 78.85, ranks sixth entering her senior year.
