Cullowhee, N.C. - The Southern Conference announced the season honorees at the conclusion of the women's golf conference tournament Tuesday and the Lady Cats were well represented on this list. Line Cordes was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year as well as being a member of the All-Conference Team. Coach Steve Lott was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year. This was the first time that Lott has received this honor, as well as the first time any Lady Catamount golfer has ever garnered conference honors.

Cordes, a freshman from Bronderslev, Denmark, has recorded an outstanding first year for Western Carolina. Cordes was the champion of the Great Smokies Intercollegiate tournament in October, finishing first of 125 golfers, with rounds of 75 and a career-low 71. She finished in the top ten in her last seven events of the regular season, including a second place finish in Western's own Lady Catamount Intercollegiate, with rounds of 71 and 73. She currently holds the school's 18- and 36-hole scoring records and was named SoCon Golfer of the Week twice this spring. Cordes was also WCU's Student Athlete of the Month in October.

Lott, the fourth-year coach of the women's golf team, led the team to its best season in school history. The Catamounts ended their season with a 318.04 stroke average, a 16-shot improvement from last year (334-318). They were the champions of the Belmont Lady Bruin Invitational, Elon Intercollegiate and the Baytree-Green Course Championship. They finished second in their home Lady Catamount Intercollegiate in April. The Lady Cats finished eighth or better in every event.

WCU had its first ever team and individual champions this year. They broke the school scoring record in seven of ten events. For the first time ever, the team's scoring average was better in the spring than the fall. Prior to this year, no player had ever gone into the SoCon Tournament averaging in the 70s. This year three players accomplished this. The freshman class of Cordes and Johanna Lundberg are ranked 17th by Golfstat and are in the top ten in scoring average (77.9).

"These end-of-year recognitions are a tribute to the progress this team has made over the course of this season and the last several years," said WCU Athletic Director Jeff Compher. "Hopefully this is an indication of what the team can be like in the future as we continue to recruit well and compete in this conference."
