Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina senior Bianca Melone was today named the Southern Conference Women's Golfer of the Week for her performance at the UNC Wilmington Lady Seahawk Invitational held at the River Landing Golf Course in Wallace, N.C.

The honor is the second-straight for the Catamount women as junior Kandy Carland garnered the award last week. It is also the first-ever for Melone, who becomes the fourth-different Catamount to earn the award. In addition, it also marks the third recognition for the squad this season as junior Malin Fryk was tabbed the conference golfer of the month back in September.

Melone, a senior from Orlando, Fla., finished tied for sixth out of 95 golfers at the Lady Seahawk Invitational last weekend. Her three-day total of 223 (73-75-75) led Western to an eighth place finish, tying the team's best showing this spring. Melone, also tied the 10th-best, 54-hole score in school history.

The top 10 finish for Melone, who was the runner-up in last year's Southern Conference Championship, was her third of the season and ninth of her career.

Western travels to the John Kirk/Lady Panther Intercollegiate, hosted by Georgia State in Stockbridge, Ga., this coming Monday and Tuesday, April 1-2.
