Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina junior Kandy Carland was today named the Southern Conference Women's Golfer of the Week for her performance for the week ending March 21. The award was the first weekly honor for the Catamounts this spring, with Carland joining the SoCon September Golfer of the Month, junior Malin Fryk, as honorees from the league office.
Carland led a short-handed Western Carolina squad to an eight-place finish at the Shamrock Invitational, hosted by Winthrop University at the Tega Cay Golf Club. Western carded rounds of 344 and 343 for a two-round total of 687, just three strokes out of seventh.
Two of WCU's normal top five - freshmen Elin Mickelsson and Desiree Karlsson - both missed the tournament with injury leaving Western with just four players scoring. Carland shot rounds of 77 and 79 to place fourth overall, her best finish since finishing second at the Cincinnati Fall Classic back in mid-October.
The Hendersonville, N.C., native continues to enjoy the 10th-best single-season in school history with a stroke average of 77.33 and also ranks eighth on Western's career scoring average chart having lowered her career average to 79.94.
Hoping to be back at full-strength, the Catamounts return to action next Monday and Tuesday, March 26-27, at the UNC Wilmington Spring Invitational. The event will be played at the River Landing Golf Course in Wallace, N.C., in eastern North Carolina. Last year, Western Carolina finished second in the event, just two strokes in arrears of team champion, Kentucky, after shooting the eighth-best, 54-hole score in school history (908).
