Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina women's golfer Becca Twiner, along with UNC Greensboro's Polly Willett, has been named the Southern Conference's first Golfer of the Week for 2004. This is the first such honor for the senior as she wraps up her Catamount career this spring.
Twiner, a senior from Crystal River, Fla., won the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate individual title by shooting a three-round 219, giving her the second first-place finish in her collegiate career. She also won the 2001 Belmont Lady Bruin Invitational. Twiner's final round of 69 Tuesday tied for the second-lowest single-round score in school history.
The four-year captain currently holds the fourth-lowest career stroke average in Catamount history at an average of 78.85 strokes per round. Twiner has been the foundation of the modern era WCU women's golf program and one of the most consistent players in the program's history. She was the first Catamount to ever win an event, the first to break 70 and the first to average in the 70s.
"I'm very excited for Becca and that she's being recognized for her accomplishments," head coach Steve Lott said. "I'm very happy that she won this last tournament. It was the only time in her career she's been able to go to Florida to play near her home. She was in the zone on that course. You could tell just by looking at her that she was going to win that tournament."
