Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina redshirt sophomore Kristin Swindell has been named the Southern Conference women's golfer of the week for all competition from March 5-11. The selection is made by the league office.
The honor is the first for Swindell who transferred to WCU prior to the fall of 2013. The weekly award is the first for a Catamount women's golfer since Sofie Kvarnstrom received recognition in April of 2012.
Swindell posted a runner-up finish at the UNF Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, firing a two-day total of 226 to pace the Catamounts to the team victory. WCU led wire-to-wire, turning in a team score of 919 to finish 11 strokes clear of runner-up Daytona State.
One of three WCU golfers to finish in the top 10 at the tournament, Swindell posted rounds of 73, 79 and 74 to tie for second place at the par-72, 6,144-yard Jacksonville Golf & Country Club. She charted 34 pars over the 54-hole event.
The team title was the Catamounts' second this academic year, as they won the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in September.
Western Carolina returns to action this weekend at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational at Eagle Landing Golf Club in Orange Park, Fla.
Also nominated: Emily Stinson (Appalachian State), Kellie Anderson (The Citadel) and Stephanie Carlozzi (Furman).
