Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina's women's golf team had two players finish in the top 20 en route to a sixth place finish at the inaugural Lady Jaguar Invitational held at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. WCU finished tied with Arkansas-Little Rock with a two-day total of 649 (324-325) to conclude the fall portion of its 2004-05 schedule.

Four of Western's five participating golfers improved upon their standing after the first round, including junior Ashley Hovda who led the way for the Lady Cats with a 10th place finish. She recorded a two-day total of 158, a mere six strokes off the lead, to finish in the three-way deadlock. Classmate Brandy Andersen placed in a four-way tie for 18th, shooting a 162 on the 5,954-yard course.

Western freshmen Lucinda Davies and Kandy Carland continued the trend of improvement, jumping from 44th and 52nd after 18 holes to finish tied for 30th and 43rd, respectively. Davies fired an 82 on the second day, a one-stroke improvement, to finish with a 165 overall, while Carland carded a pair of 84s to finish at 168. Sophomore Bianca Melone made the biggest gain over her first-round tally, carding an 80 on the second day to move from 71st to finish locked in a seven-way tie for 47th with a total of 169.

The University of Maryland carded the low round of the tournament on Tuesday, a 314, for a two-day total of 633 to pull away and take the team title by eight strokes. Host Augusta State could not maintain its first-round advantage and finished tied for second with Longwood University, each firing a 641, with UNC Greensboro and Jacksonville State tying for fourth at 647 to round out the top five teams.

Sophomore Katie Stepanek of Maryland shot 76 each day to win the individual medal honors with a two-round total of 152, edging out Lauren Dodge of Birmingham Southern by one stroke. Stephanie Hicks of Longwood and Shanelle Howell of Jacksonville State finished tied for third with scores of 154, with Polly Willett of UNCG and Emily Ogilvy of Arkansas-Little Rock rounding out the top five, tied at an 11-over, 155.

Western Carolina returns to action on March 6-8 as they travel to the College of Charleston / Pinehurst Shootout in Pinehurst, N.C.
