Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's golf team bounced back over the final 18 holes of the America's Choice Mortgage Lady Jaguar Invitational, carding the fourth-lowest round of the final day to rally to fifth-place as a team in the final event of the fall portion of the 2005-06 season. The Catamounts carded a two-day total of 636, which ranks 14th on the all-time, two-round tournament charts.
Leading the way for the Cats was senior Brandy Andersen, who carded back-to-back scores of 77 to finish in a two-way tie for sixth place. It marked Andersen's fourth top 10 finish of the fall, and her first since placing eighth at the Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercollegiate in early October. The Orlando, Fla., native ranked second in the tournament on par 5 scoring, shooting one-under as only one of three golfers to break par on the longest holes on the course.
Sophomore Malin Fryk rallied from her position tied in 39th after the first round to finish tied for 14th with a two-day total of 157, carding the lowest single-round by any Catamount at the tournament with a 74 on Tuesday. She concluded the tournament tied for third in birdies, with five. Junior Bianca Melone placed tied for 31st with two-consecutive 81's for a 162, with senior Erika Danford one stroke back at 163 in a three-way tie for 33rd. Rounding out Western's scorers was senior Ashley Hovda, who finished tied for 52nd marking the first time this fall season she has failed to place in the top 10 for the Catamounts.
Playing as an individual for WCU was sophomore Kandy Carland, two positions behind Hovda in 54th.
Led by four players in the top 10, tournament host Augusta State claimed its third-consecutive team title, finishing 16 strokes ahead of second-place, Notre Dame. The Lady Jaguars carded rounds of 302 and 299 to finish the 36-holes with a team score of 601. Former Southern Conference-member, East Tennessee State, finished behind the Fightin' Irish of Notre Dame in third with a score of 626, followed by Arkansas State (633) and Western.
Individually, Augusta State's Lauren Smith took home individual medalist honors, edging Noriko Nakazaki of Notre Dame by a stroke, 146-to-147. The win for the senior Smith was her first of her collegiate career.
Western Carolina concludes a very successful fall season, perhaps the best in school history. Western opened 2005 by claiming individual medalists and team champions in each of the first three tournaments, as well as finishing in the top five in five of the six scheduled tournaments. Two Catamounts claimed the three individual titles, led by Hovda with two and Fryk, who scored the honor in her first event at Western.
WCU's stroke average through the fall is 302.14, which is nearly identical to the fall score from the 2002-03 season of 302.26. The Catamounts won the Southern Conference Championship the following spring.
Western returns to action in the spring with another Lady Jaguar Invitational. The Catamounts will travel to Mobile, Ala., for a tournament hosted by the Univ. of South Alabama March 6-7, 2006. The team will have four tune-up events leading into the 2006 SoCon Championships, which will be held in the Piedmont of North Carolina in Mebane in late April.
