Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's golf team fired a first-round 324 on Monday to stand in a three-way tie for seventh after the first round of the Lady Jaguar Invitational hosted by Augusta State at the par 72, 5,954-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in August, Ga. The Lady Catamounts are deadlocked with Elon and Arkansas-Little Rock, but only stand six strokes out of first.

Western juniors Ashley Hovda and Brandy Andersen led the way for the Lady Cats, firing a 78 and 79, respectively on the first day. Hovda recovered from a 42 on the front nine to card a tournament-low 36 on the back to stand in a tie three ways for 12th. She was one of only four golfers to shoot par on nine holes on the day. Andersen is in a five-way log jam for 15th place with one round to play.

The WCU freshmen Lucinda Davies and Kandy Carland shot an 83 and 84 to stand in ties for 44th and 52nd, while sophomore Bianca Melone finished with an 89 on the first-18, locked in a four-way tie for 71st.

Sparked by freshman Garrett Phillips' opening round of three-over 75, host Augusta State posted a 318 to grab the team lead after the first round. The Lady Jaguars hold a one-stroke lead over Longwood and the University of Maryland, who are tied for second at 319. Rounding out the top five are UNC Greensboro in fourth, two strokes back at 320, and Birmingham Southern.

Augusta State's Phillips is in a three-way tie for the lead with Polly Willett of UNCG and Shanelle Howell of Jacksonville State. The second and final round of the event will be played on Tuesday, November 9 with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.
