Cullowhee, N.C. - Junior Ashley Hovda fired a team-low 71 in the second round to move close to the top ten individually, however, a tough final round for Western Carolina concluded with the Lady Catamount golf team finishing 15th at the Edwin Watts-Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Oak Point Golf Course at Kiawah Island, S.C.
After playing 27 holes on Monday, the teams played the final nine holes of the second round before beginning play on the 18 of the third and final round Tuesday morning at the par 72, 5,911-yard course.
Hovda moved up into a tie for 11th overall after shooting the 71, which tied with 12 others for the second-lowest round in the tournament and marked her second-lowest career round. Yet, the Springfield, OH native could only manage an 82 on the final 18 holes to slip into a four-way tie for 38th. After pacing the team on the first day, junior Brandy Andersen carded a 76 and 81 on Tuesday for finish tied for 44th with a three-day total of 231.
A bright spot for Western was the play of freshman Lucinda Davies. The Petersborough, England native was the only WCU golfer to improve her scores each round. After shooting a dismal 89 on the first day, Davies rallied to turn in a second round 80 and a final round 78, her second-lowest total of the season, to finish in a tie for 83rd.
Rounding out the finishing for the Lady Cats were sophomore Bianca Melone and freshman Kandy Carland, both in at 249, tied for 85th.
Campbell University led from start to finish, carding a team 882 to win the team championship. The Camels were closely followed by Michigan, which rallied to finish second, three strokes back at 885. Rounding out the top five teams were Southern Methodist in third with a three-day tally of 888, followed by Nebraska (889) in fourth, and Coastal Carolina (890) in fifth.
Adrienne Millican of East Carolina followed up her tournament-low 70 on Monday with a 71 and 72 to finish with a three-day total of 213 to win the individual crown. She was followed by Merynn Ito of Nebraska in second with 215, Adrienne White (Louisville) and Ali Stinson (Michigan) tied for third with identical 216, and Cambell's Alejandra Shaw and Stinson's Wolverine teammate, Brianna Broderick, tied for fifth, in at 217.
Western entered the final round Tuesday afternoon with a cumulative 622, which had them placed tied for 14th, only one stroke out of 13th position. However, the final round 324 relegated the Cats to their final finishing place, ahead of both Appalachian State and The Citadel from the Southern Conference.
Western Carolina returns to action next weekend as they travel to the Lady Jaguar Invitational hosted by Augusta State to conclude the fall portion of its 2004-05 schedule.
