Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina was a picture of consistency, carding three-consecutive team rounds of 313 to finish with a three-round total 939 to finish 12th at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon at the Oak Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C. The 54-hole 939 also ranks 12th on the school's all-time, three-round tournament list. Senior Ashley Hovda was the highest finishing Catamount, placing in a five-way tie for sixth place with a score of 225.
The University of Idaho recorded the tournament's second lowest team round of 298 on the final 18 holes to rally from fourth after two rounds to win the team title, edging the host College of Charleston Cougars by one stroke, 912-to-913. The Cougars recorded the tourney's lowest round of 297 on the second 18 to move to the front. Nebraska was third, two strokes off the lead, with Maryland (919) and first-round leading Campbell finishing fifth with a 920.
Idaho's Renee Skidmore won the individual medalist honors, shooting her low round of 71 on Tuesday afternoon. She edged Adrienne White of Louisville by a stroke, 220-to-221, with Gretchen Zoeller of Charleston placing third, two strokes in arrears of the winner.
After shooting 74 and standing in a tie for fourth after the first 18 holes, Hovda struggled in the second round which was split over two days, nine holes on Monday and the final nine on Tuesday morning, shooting 78 to nearly fall outside of the top 10. Yet, the Springfield, Ohio, native rallied to card 73 over the final round to secure her fourth-straight, top six finish of the year. Additionally, her 225 ranks as the 11th-best, 54-hole tournament score in school history. Hovda was tied for the most birdies in the tournament with 11 over the three rounds.
Sophomore Malin Fryk was nearly the exact opposite of her senior teammate as she rebounded from her opening round 79 to card a 73 in the split session before slipping with an 80 in the final round to finish tied for 29th with a 232. Junior Bianca Melone advanced one position from where she ended the first round, finishing tied for 56th with a three-round score of 240. Hovda's classmate, senior Brandy Andersen, dropped into a tie for 65th with rounds of 82 and 81 to accompany her opening 79 for a two-day total of 242. Rounding out Western's representatives was sophomore Kandy Carland in 93rd (266).
Western returns to action next Monday and Tuesday at the America's Choice Mortgage Lady Jaguar Invitational, hosted by Augusta State in Augusta, Ga., at the Forest Hills Golf Club. The two-round, 36-hole tournament begins with a shot gun start on Monday morning. The Catamounts will look to improve upon last year's sixth-place showing.
