Cullowhee, N.C. - After 18 of 54 scheduled holes, the Western Carolina women's golf team stands in 10th place at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C. after recording a team score of 313. Senior Ashley Hovda, who has recorded four-consecutive top 10 finishes and three-consecutive inside the top three, fired an opening round 74 to rank tied for fourth with six additional competitors.
In unique formatting fashion, the 19 teams played 27 holes on Monday to make up the first round and a half of the scheduled three-round tournament. Scores from the first nine holes of round two were not released. Teams will concluded the final nine holes of the second round on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8:15 am, with the third and final round to follow immediately.
Three individuals are currently tied for the individual lead, all with first round scores of 73. Ellie Brown of Nebraska fired a 34 on the back nine to complete the first round in first place, tied with Alejandra Shaw of Campbell and Ann Maness of Coastal Carolina. Campbell leads the team rankings with a first round 301, one stroke ahead of Maness' Chanticleers, two strokes back with a 303. The University of Illinois is third with a 308, followed by Idaho at 309 and Nebraska and Maryland tied with 310.
Hovda blistered the front nine of the par-72, 5930-yard Oak Point Golf Course, shooting the lowest round of all 98 entered competitors with a four-under par, 32. However, she slipped on the back nine, carding a 42 to stand with the first round total of 74, just one stroke in arrears of the leaders.
Senior Brandy Andersen and sophomore Malin Fryk are both tied for 43rd after the first round, in the clubhouse with opening round scores of 79. Junior Bianca Melone is tied for 57th after the first round, shooting 81 on Monday, with sophomore Kandy Carland two strokes back at 83, tied for 78th overall.
Again, the tournament's second round, which started this afternoon with the first nine holes, will conclude with a shotgun start at 8:15 AM Tuesday, with the third and final round will begin immediately after.
