Kiawah Island, S.C. - Two Catamounts posted top 10 finishes as Western Carolina finished in eighth place at the 18-team Palmetto Intercollegiate concluded Tuesday afternoon at the par-72, 5,916-yard Oak Point Golf Club. Senior Desiree Karlsson fired a five-over 221 to finish tied for sixth while countryman, junior Josefine Sundh, was one stroke in arrears in a tie for 10th to pace WCU to an eighth place finish overall.

Karlsson has four top 10 finishes to date this fall, while Sundh has thrice finished inside the top 10. The Swedish tandem of Karlsson and Sundh combined for 19 of WCU's 29 birdies in the three-round event.

Western Carolina equaled its best team round of the two-day, three-round tournament on Tuesday, recording a team score of 300 for a 54-hole score of 909. The eighth-place finish for the Catamounts snapped WCU's string of three-straight team and individual championships to open the 2009 season. WCU was the best of four Southern Conference teams in the field.

East Tennessee State blistered the field, shooting 879 to win the team championship by 16 strokes over second-place, Kansas (895). Kennesaw State finished third, one stroke in arrears at 896, followed by East Carolina (897) and Maryland (898) rounding out the top five.

Maryland's Jessie Holldandsworth, who shot seven-under, 137, on the opening day of the three-round tournament, limped home with a four-over 76 but managed to stave off both Arkansas-Little Rock's Mallory Fraiche (217) and Sinead O'Sullivan (217) from East Tennessee State to win the individual medalist honors by four strokes.

Western Carolina freshman Malin Jansson, who recorded 38 pars through 54 holes, finished tied for 32nd at 228, carding a two-over 74 on the final 18 holes Tuesday. Rounding out WCU's finishers were senior Tiffany Schisler in a tie for 71st (238) and sophomore Blaire Minter, tied for 76th (239).

The Catamounts, who withdrew prior to the Richmond Intercollegiate two weeks ago due to team illness, will have one final tournament this fall before turning its attention to the six-event spring that tees off in February and includes hosting a pair of events - the Low Country Intercollegiate (March 12-14) and the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate (April 4-6). WCU will travel to Pinehurst, N.C., for the Pinehurst Challenge being hosted by the College of Charleston at Pinehurst No. 6.
