Cullowhee, N.C. - Led by senior Ashley Hovda's third-consecutive top five finish, the Western Carolina women's golf team finished tied for fifth at the East Carolina/Taco Bell Intercollegiate on Sunday, carding a three-round, team total of 898. The 54-hole score ranked as the fourth-best on the WCU all-time charts. Hovda, who tied her career-low with a 66 in the first round, finished tied for third in the event for the Catamounts.

Hovda shot 74 in the final round to finish with a 216 (66-76-74), ranking as the third-best, three-round individual score in school history. Junior Bianca Melone tied for the 13th best, 54-hole score on the weekend, carding a 226 (72-78-76), which included her season-low round of 72 on Friday. Melone placed in a tie for 30th overall.

Rounding out the scores for Western were senior Brandy Andersen and sophomore Malin Fryk, both tied for 47th with twin 230 scores, and senior Erika Danford, who placed tied for 59th with a three-day total of 233. Danford did manage to lower her career average, moving up one spot to eighth on the WCU career scoring average list.

Augusta State took home the team title, carding 875 to defeat Georgia State by five strokes (880). The University of Maryland finished third with a score of 882, followed by Miami (FL) in fourth at 897 and Western tied with East Carolina with identical scores of 898.

 

 

Katie Stepanek from Maryland won the individual medalist honors, shooting 211 to win by four strokes.

Western Carolina returns to action next Monday and Tuesday, October 31st and November 1st, as they travel to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate.
