Greenville, N.C. - After 18 holes at Bradford Creek Golf Course, the Western Carolina women's golf team stands as both the team and individual leaders at the Taco Bell Intercollegiate. The Catamounts turned in a four-under par 284 to hold a one-stroke lead over Georgia State. Western was able to take its 18-hole lead thanks to first round leader and Catamount senior Ashley Hovda, who carded a six-under 66 for a three-stroke lead over the next closest competitors in the field.
For Western, the 284 is a school record by two strokes, while Hovda tied her own school record by firing a 66 for the second time in as many events. (Brandy Andersen has also carded a 66 in her career.)
Western's score was also bolstered by a pair of even par rounds by Bianca Melone and Erica Danford, who are both tied for 13th place. Andersen is only two strokes behind her teammates, firing a 74 to tie for 32nd. Western was rounded out by Malin Fryk, who turned in a 76.
The top three spots in the Taco Bell Intercollegiate are close. Other than Western's 284 and Georgia State's 285, Augusta State is close on their heels with a 286. Mercer and Maryland are tied for fourth, each turning in a round of 294.
If Western Carolina maintains its lead, playing 18 more holes Saturday, the Catamounts will have won each of their four events played this fall. Also, if Hovda holds on for individual medalist honors, she will have won three times this fall, with Fryk claiming an individual title as well this fall.
