Waynesville, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's golf team came back from six strokes down Monday to win the Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercollegiate for the second consecutive year, beating out challenger Murray State by nine strokes overall. Also taking home a trophy is WCU sophomore Brandy Andersen who claimed medalist honors for the second consecutive week, edging Xavier's Emily Shoplik by one stroke to win her fifth title in her career; third of the season.
The Catamounts rallied to card a 292 in the final round, which ties the program's lowest single-round score in WCU history. For the tournament, the team shot a 592, which stands as the second-lowest, two-round score in the program's history. Western's lowest two-round score came at last year's home tournament when the team shot a 586.
Andersen followed up her one-under par on day one to score a 74 in the final round for a two-day total of 145, which is the third-lowest two-round total in school history. Knotted in fourth place were Catamount golfers Becca Twiner, Bianca Melone and Ashley Hovda, who each finished with 149 strokes for the tournament. Erika Danford finished the day with an 81 for a two-day total of 158, which ties for 50th. Shooting individually for Western were Jennifer Palmer (164), Meredith Beck (175) and Danielle Hawkins (202).
The individual race tightened in the final round as just five strokes separated first and eighth place. Following Andersen and Shoplik was Murray State's Lee-Anne Pace who finished third with a 147, just two strokes out of the lead. Tied with Twiner, Melone and Hovda for fourth was Austin Peay's Lynn Mantooth and in eighth with a 150 was Wofford's Laura Robinson. The top seven individuals, including the four players tied for fourth, were named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the event.
The Lady Cats close out their fall season Nov. 3-4 at the Edwin Watts-Palmetto Intercollegiate, hosted by the College of Charleston in Kiawah Island, S.C.
