Greenville, N.C. - Three Catamounts stand tied for 17th individually and the squad is tied for fifth after the first of three rounds at the Lady Pirate Invitational at the par 72, 6,232-yard Bradford Creek Golf Course. Western shot 297 on Friday and stands nine-shots off the lead.
Senior Bianca Melone and juniors Malin Fryk and Kandy Carland each carded opening rounds of two-over 74 on Friday to stand tied for 17th. Melone and Carland both shot an even 36 on the front nine before finishing two over on the back nine, while Fryk was the opposite, shooting 38 on the front and 36 on the back. Freshman Desiree Karlsson is one stroke back with 75 over the first 18 holes, tied for 27th, while her classmate, Elin Mickelsson, fired a 79 and is tied for 66th.
Birmingham-Southern carded an opening round 288 to lead second-place Central Florida by three strokes. Elon stands third, six strokes behind the leaders with a 294, with Texas El-Paso (295) in fourth and Maryland and Western tied for fifth (297).
WCU's 297 on Friday ties for the fourth-lowest team round this fall, and ranks tied for 22nd on the all-time single round scoring chart.
Second round action will continue Saturday morning starting at 7:30 am, with the third and final round set for Sunday.
