Waynesville, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's golf team stands in second place, while sophomore Brandy Andersen leads the pack individually after round one of the Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercollegiate. The reigning tournament champion Catamounts carded a 300 for the day, just six strokes behind tournament leader Murray State University with a 294.
Andersen ended the day with a 71 to finish one-under on the par-72, 5,867-yard course at the Waynesville Country Club. She is followed by Lee-Anne Pace of Murray State and Emily Shoplik of Xavier, who each finished even par for the round to tie for second.
Not a single Catamount on the five-person team shot in the 80s as senior Becca Twiner and freshman Bianca Melone stand in a tie for 16th, each shooting a 76, and sophomore Ashley Hovda and freshman Erika Danford both in 22nd after each carded a 77 in the first round. Sophomore Jennifer Palmer, playing as an individual, shot an 82 for the day. Also playing as individuals are senior Meredith Beck with an 89 and Danielle Hawkins with a 101.
The 24-team field returns to the links Tuesday morning to wrap up tournament play in the second round. All players will tee of at 9:30 am for the shotgun start.
