Batavia, Ohio -
Heavy overnight downpours on an already rain-soaked course at the Elks Run Golf Club has forced the cancellation of play at the Cincinnati Fall Classic with the host Bearcats claiming the tournament team championship. Western Carolina, which stood second after the opening round, finished in second place at the event running its season streak of top three finishes to four.
Four Catamounts posted top 10 individual finishes, led by junior Kandy Carland. The Hendersonville, N.C., native was the tournament's runner-up after shooting 74 on Monday, with her classmate, Malin Fryk, right behind her in third one stroke back. Freshman Desiree Karlsson and senior Bianca Melone finished tied for ninth after shooting six-over, 78, in the first round, with Elin Mickelsson shooting 86 to finish tied for 37th.
"We really wanted to play today and I liked our chances, but we also did not want to attempt to shoot low on an unplayable course," said WCU head coach Steve Lott. "The tournament coordinators looked at the course this morning and deduced that to find refuge from standing water that the players would have to move their ball 20-to-30 yards and that's just not feasible."
All told, Western's women's golf team has now posted 10-consecutive top five team finishes and has finished in the top five in 14 of its last 15 events dating back to the spring of 2005. During the same run, at least one WCU striker has finished in the individual top 10.
First-round leader - and defending individual medalist - Hillery Wilson of Cincinnati won the individual medalist honors to lead the host Bearcats to the team crown.
Western returns to action this Friday, Oct. 20 through Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Lady Pirate Invitational hosted by East Carolina at the Bradford Creek Golf Course in Greenville. The Catamounts finished tied for fifth in last year's event, shooting a school-record round of 284 on the opening day. WCU has played in the tournament a total of six times with an average finish of seventh. The Catamounts earned their best-ever finish in 2002-03 when they finished as the team runner-up to the host Pirates.
