Batavia, Ohio - Western Carolina carded an opening round 305 as a team on Monday to hit the clubhouse in second place, two strokes behind the host Cincinnati Bearcats at the Cincinnati Fall Classic women's golf tournament at the par 72, 6,036-yard Elks Run Golf Club.

Intermittent rain showers made for a damp afternoon but only affected the Catamounts over the final few holes as WCU was among the first groups to tee off at 9:00 am. Weather permitting, the second and final round will tee off on Tuesday morning at 9:00 am with set tee times on the first and 10th holes. Forecasts are for rainy and windy conditions through the evening in the Cincinnati suburb with an 80-percent chance of showers throughout the morning on Tuesday.

The Catamounts, who are seeking back-to-back tournament titles after winning their own Wachovia -Great Smokies Intercollegiate two weeks ago, were led by a pair of juniors over the first 18 on Monday. Kandy Carland carded a 74 to stand in second-place, while her classmate Malin Fryk was one stroke in arrears with a 75 in third place.

Freshman Desiree Karlsson and senior Bianca Melone are also listed in the top 10 after identical opening rounds of 78 to stand tied for ninth, with WCU freshman Elin Mickelsson shooting 86 to stand tied for 37th.

Defending tournament individual medalist, Hillery Wilson of Cincinnati, stands as the first-round leader after shooting a one-under, 71, on Monday. She is followed by Carland and Fryk, with Rebecka Nilsson from Southern Mississippi in fourth (76) with four tied for fifth with opening rounds of 77.

Cincinnati leads the eight-team field after shooting 303 on Monday, with WCU two strokes back in second at 305. Southern Mississippi was third 18 strokes behind Western with a team 323, followed by Bowling Green in fourth with a 325 opening round. There was a three-way tie for fifth between Eastern Kentucky, Ball State, and Ohio Univ., as each team carded a 328, with Cincinnati's "B" team and Robert Morris rounding out the field.
