Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina women's golfer Becca Twiner broke the individual single-round school record by two strokes Monday, shooting a 69, good for two under par and a first place finish, in day one of East Carolina's Lady Pirate Fall Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C. Twiner is leading the 84-golfer field by three storkes.
The previous WCU single-round record, set on three different occasions, was 71. Twiner's previous best was a 72, which she shot at last year's SoCon Tournament.
After the first round, Western Carolina sits in second place with a 305 team score, which ties the team's fourth-best single-round score. The Lady Cats currently stand behind tournament host East Carolina, which shot a 296 as a team.
Line Cordes shot a 76 for WCU, putting her in a tie for 11th place. Johanna Lundberg is tied for 22nd after shooting a 79. Brandy Andersen and Ashley Hovda came out tied for 28th and 36th after shooting an 81 and 82, respectively. Meredith Beck, playing unattached, shot a 91 for round one to tie for 73rd.
The Lady Catamounts have historically fared well on the course at the Greenville, N.C., Country Club. WCU had already registered three team and two individual records on the course before today.
Western Carolina finishes the tournament Tuesday and returns home to prepare for their own Wachovia - Great Smokies Intercollegiate set for next Monday and Tuesday, October 21-22 at the Waynesville Country Club.
