Cullowhee, N.C. - After 36 of the scheduled 54 holes of the Lady Pirate Fall Invitational, the Western Carolina women's golf team stands in eighth place at the Bradford Creek Country Club in Greenville, N.C.

Western was led by junior Ashley Hovda who fired back-to-back rounds of 74 for a two-round total of 148, placing her in a four-way tie for 13th. Hovda's classmate, Brandy Andersen, shot eight over on the day, carding a pair of 76 rounds to stand tied in 37th with five others. Andersen is the defending medalist of the event having shot a three-round total of 215 a year ago, the second-best 54-hole score in the tournament's five-year history.

Included in the six-way tie for 37th is the Catamount sophomore Bianca Melone, who shot a first-round 77 but rallied to card a 75 in the afternoon round. Finishing out the scoring for the Cats on the day were freshmen Kandy Carland with a total of 158 (82 and 76) and Lucinda Davies 172 (82 and 90).

Augusta State, paced by overall leader Patti Hogeboom, leads the 17-team field after the first day with a team total score of 584. The Jaguars are followed by Coastal Carolina in second, five strokes back with a 589 and the host East Carolina Lady Pirates in third six off the lead at 590. Rounding out the Top Five are the University of Maryland (596) and East Tennessee State (596), tied for fourth.

The final round of the event will be played on Tuesday, October 11 starting at 8:00 a.m.
